Video Recap & Hands on Exercise…
1. Does this new product/service support your business mission?
We all have a mission to make our little corner of the world a better place. That is kind of why we do what we do. But is also easy to lose sight of the mission when we are caught up in the energy and excitement of a brand new year. So before saying yes to a new product/service ask yourself, “Does this support my business mission?” If the answer isn’t a super clear “YES!” then now is not the time to add this product/service.
Example: My mission is to fill the small business world with website that work as hard as you do. If I were to start managing people’s social media (something I can do, and have been asked to do) I am not focused on my mission, because social media platforms aren’t websites. To offer social media management would be to split my focus and in the end both services would be good at best.
2. Am I excited and passionate about this new product/service?
When a new idea comes to us it is hard not to feel a level of excitement? You may even feel very passionately about exploring the new idea. But are you passionate about offering that precise product/service or your excitement and passion tied to something else.
I myself get super excited and passionate about learning anything new, but just because I have learned how to do something, doesn’t mean I will be passionate about doing it day in and day out. If you aren’t willing to do it every day, then it is clear the excitement and passion you feel is not in the product/service.
3. Can I deliver this product/service with WOW?
I cannot tell you how many times I have made the decision to launch something new long before I was ready. The result was a mediocre product/service and a blemish on my reputation.
If you don’t have the resources to deliver a WOW factor now, set the idea aside where you can see it often. By doing this you are allowing yourself time to plan, explore and build on the idea, so that when the timing and resources are right, you can deliver with WOW and add a little extra shine to your already stellar reputation.
Hands on exercise:
Step 1:
Grab a pen and paper and list off the things that you have been considering. Now next to each item on your list write, “This new product/service support my business mission by…” now complete that sentence. If the answer doesn’t come easy, cross the item off your list.
Step 2:
Take your shortened list to a mirror near by and say the first item out loud while looking at yourself in the mirror. Notice your facial expressions, your body language, and your breathing. Your body is going to tell you for sure if this is something you are truly excited about, and if it is not, cross it off your list!
Step 3:
Explore each remaining item on your list and do a little brainstorming as to what you will need to launch this product/service delivery nothing less than a WOW! You may not have all the resources today to get started, but you at least have a plan to move forward with when the timing is right for you!
